Remembering to Remember

This post is part of a series where I share perspectives on life, work, balance, and everything in between.

I’ve been feeling a little bit of self doubt lately.

If we picture the classic shoulder angel setup, it’s easy to imagine that these feelings are coming from the guy in the red suit with the pitchfork. But I’m not convinced that, even if shoulder angels were real, that’s who would be talking.

Because the voice that’s saying “do you still have it?” is the same voice that’s pushing me to find the thing I felt like I was missing. To do something about it.

So, tonight, I did.

It had been a while since I’d updated my personal website and I spent a little time after dinner brainstorming ways to better tell my story, not just for the world but also for myself. I brainstormed a little bit of new copy for the main paragraph and, below that, I visualized a 3-column grid that might hold some interesting talking points about my skills or career. Grids aren’t much fun to look at without something inside, so I turned my brainstorming powers to ensuring my grid’s fun-meter was as high as possible.

And that’s when it happened…I started to remember.

  • I remembered the book I wrote about resort marketing automation and how we generated hundreds of leads within a few weeks of launching.
  • I remembered the ABM campaign I created where we sent customized booklets to hundreds of prospects and got a 15% response rate.
  • I remembered the content series I ran that at one point was generating something close to 30-40% of all our demos and new clients.
  • I remembered the way I took our user group that was bleeding money and reimagined everything from sponsorship packages to our venue and not just kept it rolling, but actually made a profit for the first time in the event’s history.
  • I remembered the new booking engine design I spearheaded and how excited the market was when it shipped.
  • I remembered how well my talk at a major industry conference went and how they invited me to speak again at their next event later that year.
  • I remembered all the customer stories I’d written and how well those had performed in our lead gen and engagement campaigns.

I…just…remembered.

Remembering was exactly what I needed but remembering, as funny as it sounds, is something I had forgotten to do.

Hi, I'm Gregg.

I'm a marketer (and maker) of smaller, B2B SaaS platforms.

By day I lead marketing for Inntopia and AthleteReg, evenings see me building SendView, and every year I practice new skills with a small project like Hoverpost or Annivesary Logos. This site? It's where I process what I learn along the way.
